Use

Temporary relief of nasal congestion, running nose, sneezing, itching of nose and throat, and itchy, watery eyes due to common cold, hay fever, or other upper respiratory allergies

Usual Dosage

Children >12 years and Adults: 1 capsule/tablet or 10 mL 4 times/day (every 6 hours) with food or fluid

Dental Health: Local Anesthetic/Vasoconstrictor Precautions

Use with caution since phenylpropanolamine and phenylephrine are sympathomimetic amines which could interact with epinephrine to cause a pressor response


Dental Health: Effects on Dental Treatment

Guaifenesin: No effects or complications reported

Phenylephrine, Phenylpropanolamine: Up to 10% of patients could experience tachycardia, palpitations, and dry mouth; use vasoconstrictor with caution

Nursing Implications

Extended release tablets may be cut in half and still maintain effective release properties, do not crush or chew

Capsule (Contuss®, Dura-Gest®, Enomine®, Entex®, Guiatex®, ULR®): Guaifenesin 200 mg, phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride 45 mg, and phenylephrine hydrochloride 5 mg

Liquid (Coldloc®, Contuss®, Entex®, Guaifenex®): Guaifenesin 100 mg, phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride 20 mg, and phenylephrine hydrochloride 5 mg per 5 mL (118 mL, 480 mL)

Tablet (Respinol-G®): Guaifenesin 200 mg, phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride 45 mg, and phenylephrine hydrochloride 5 mg
