Use

Symptomatic relief of nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, itchy nose or throat, and itchy or watery eyes due to the common cold or allergic rhinitis

Usual Dosage

Children <12 years: 5 mL every 3-4 hours

Children >12 years and Adults: 1 capsule every 12 hours or 5-10 mL every 3-4 hours


Dietary Considerations

May be administered with food or water


Dental Health: Local Anesthetic/Vasoconstrictor Precautions

Use with caution since phenylpropanolamine is a sympathomimetic amine which could interact with epinephrine to cause a pressor response


Dental Health: Effects on Dental Treatment

Chlorpheniramine: Prolonged use will cause significant xerostomia

Phenylpropanolamine: Up to 10% of patients could experience tachycardia, palpitations, and dry mouth; use vasoconstrictor with caution; prolonged use will cause significant xerostomia


Patient Information

May cause drowsiness. Alcohol, sedatives, or tranquilizers may increase drowsiness. Avoid driving or operating machinery while taking this product.


Nursing Implications

Swallow capsule whole, do not crush or chew


Dosage Forms

Capsule, sustained release: Chlorpheniramine maleate 12 mg and phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride 75 mg

Liquid:

Triphenyl®, Genamin®: Chlorpheniramine maleate 1 mg and phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride 6.25 mg per 5 mL

Demazin®, Rescon®, Silaminic®, Temazin®, Thera-Hist®: Chlorpheniramine maleate 2 mg and phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride 12.5 mg per 5 mL

Syrup: Chlorpheniramine maleate 2 mg and phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride 12.5 mg per 5 mL

Tablet:

Triaminic® Cold: Chlorpheniramine maleate 2 mg and phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride 12.5 mg

Chlor-Rest®: Chlorpheniramine maleate 2 mg and phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride 18.7 mg
