Symptomatic treatment of nasal and eustachian tube congestion associated with sinusitis and acute upper respiratory infection; symptomatic relief of perennial and allergic rhinitis

Usual Dosage

Oral:

3-6 months: 1/4 mL (pediatric drops) every 3-4 hours

6-12 months: 2.5 mL (pediatric syrup) or 1/2 mL (pediatric drops) every 3-4 hours

1-6 years: 5 mL (pediatric syrup) or 1 mL (pediatric drops) every 3-4 hours

6-12 years: 2.5 mL (syrup) or 10 mL (pediatric syrup) or 1/2 tablet every 3-4 hours

Children >12 years and Adults: 5 mL (syrup) or 1 tablet every 3-4 hours


Dietary Considerations

May be administered with food or water


Dental Health: Local Anesthetic/Vasoconstrictor Precautions

Use with caution since phenylpropanolamine & phenylephrine are sympathomimetic amines which could interact with epinephrine to cause a pressor response


Dental Health: Effects on Dental Treatment

Chlorpheniramine: Prolonged use will cause significant xerostomia

Phenylephrine, Phenylpropanolamine: Up to 10% of patients could experience tachycardia, palpitations, and dry mouth; use vasoconstrictor with caution


Patient Information

May cause drowsiness. Alcohol may worsen this effect. Use caution when driving or operating machinery.


Dosage Forms

Drops, pediatric: Chlorpheniramine maleate 0.5 mg, phenyltoloxamine citrate 2 mg, phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride 5 mg, and phenylephrine hydrochloride 1.25 mg per mL

Syrup: Chlorpheniramine maleate 2.5 mg, phenyltoloxamine citrate 7.5 mg, phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride 20 mg, and phenylephrine hydrochloride 5 mg per 5 mL

Syrup, pediatric: Chlorpheniramine maleate 0.5 mg, phenyltoloxamine citrate 2 mg, phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride 5 mg, and phenylephrine hydrochloride 1.25 mg per 5 mL

Tablet, sustained release: Chlorpheniramine maleate 5 mg, phenyltoloxamine citrate 15 mg, phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride 40 mg, and phenylephrine hydrochloride 10 mg
