Contraindications

Concurrent MAO inhibitor therapy; bronchial asthma; severe hypertension; hypersensitivity to caramiphen edisylate or phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride


Drug Interactions

MAO inhibitors, TCAs, NSAIDs


Usual Dosage

Oral:

2-6 years: 1/2 teaspoonful every 4 hours

6-12 years: 1 teaspoonful every 4 hours

Children >12 years and Adults: 1 capsule every 12 hours or 2 teaspoonfuls every 4 hours


Mental Health: Effects on Mental Status

May cause restlessness or insomnia

Contraindicated with concurrent MAOI therapy


Dental Health: Local Anesthetic/Vasoconstrictor Precautions

Use with caution since phenylpropanolamine is a sympathomimetic amine which could interact with epinephrine to cause a pressor response


Dental Health: Effects on Dental Treatment

Up to 10% of patients could experience tachycardia, palpitations, and dry mouth; use vasoconstrictor with caution

Dosage Forms

Capsule, timed release: Caramiphen edisylate 40 mg and phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride 75 mg

Liquid: Caramiphen edisylate 6.7 mg and phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride 12.5 mg per 5 mL
