Use

Detection of delayed hypersensitivity and assessment of cell-mediated immunity; active immunization against tetanus in the rare adult or child who is allergic to the aluminum adjuvant (a product containing adsorbed tetanus toxoid is preferred)

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to tetanus toxoid or any product components


Warnings/Precautions

Epinephrine 1:1000 should be readily available; skin test responsiveness may be delayed or reduced in elderly patients


Adverse Reactions

Percentage unknown: Very hypersensitive persons may develop a local reaction at the injection site; urticaria, anaphylactic reactions, shock and death are possible


Drug Interactions

Increased effect: Cimetidine may augment delayed hypersensitivity responses to skin test antigens

Mechanism of Action

Tetanus toxoid preparations contain the toxin produced by virulent tetanus bacilli (detoxified growth products of Clostridium tetani). The toxin has been modified by treatment with formaldehyde so that is has lost toxicity but still retains ability to act as antigen and produce active immunity.


Usual Dosage

Anergy testing: Intradermal: 0.1 mL

Primary immunization ( Note: Td, TD, DTaP/DTwP are recommended): Adults: Inject 3 doses of 0.5 mL I.M. or S.C. at 4- to 8-week intervals; administer fourth dose 6-12 months after third dose

Booster doses: I.M., S.C.: 0.5 mL every 10 years
