Porphyria, known hypersensitivity to any sulfa drug or any component


Mechanism of Action

Interferes with microbial folic acid synthesis and growth via inhibition of para-aminobenzoic acid metabolism


Pharmacodynamics/Kinetics

Metabolism: By acetylation

Elimination: Excreted in urine via glomerular filtration


Usual Dosage

Adults: Oral: 2-4 g to start, then 2-4 g/day in 3-6 divided doses


Dietary Considerations

Should be administered 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal on an empty stomach
