Hypersensitivity to sulfabenzamide, sulfacetamide, sulfathiazole or any component, renal dysfunction

Associated with Stevens-Johnson syndrome; if local irritation or systemic toxicity develops, discontinue therapy

Mechanism of Action

Interferes with microbial folic acid synthesis and growth via inhibition of para-aminobenzoic acid metabolism


Pharmacodynamics/Kinetics

Absorption: Absorption from the vagina is variable and unreliable

Metabolism: Primarily by acetylation

Elimination: By glomerular filtration into urine


Usual Dosage

Adults:

Tablet: Insert one intravaginally twice daily for 10 days

Patient Information

This medication is to be inserted into vagina; do not ingest tablets. Complete full course of therapy. Wash hands before inserting applicator gently into vagina and releasing cream or tablet. Wash hands and applicator with soap and water following each application. Discontinue and notify prescriber immediately if burning, irritation, or signs of allergic reaction occur. Pregnancy/breast-feeding precautions: Inform prescriber if you are pregnant before use. Consult prescriber if breast-feeding.

Complete full course of therapy; notify physician if burning, irritation, or signs of a systemic allergic reaction occur


Dosage Forms

Cream, vaginal: Sulfabenzamide 3.7%, sulfacetamide 2.86%, and sulfathiazole 3.42% (78 g with applicator, 90 g, 120 g)

Tablet, vaginal: Sulfabenzamide 184 mg, sulfacetamide 143.75 mg, and sulfathiazole 172.5 mg (20 tablets/box with vaginal applicator)
