Adverse Reactions

1% to 10%:

Central nervous system: Dizziness

Gastrointestinal: Nausea, abdominal pain, urge to defecate

Reconstituted solution may be kept at room temperature for 24 hours


Mechanism of Action

Stimulates contraction of the gallbladder and simultaneous relaxation of the sphincter of Oddi, inhibits gastric emptying, and increases intestinal motility. Graded doses have been shown to produce graded decreases in small intestinal transit time, thought to be mediated by acetylcholine.


Pharmacodynamics/Kinetics

Onset of action: Contraction of the gallbladder occurs within 5-15 minutes

Duration: ~1 hour


Usual Dosage

Adults: I.V.:

Pancreatic function: 0.02 mcg/kg over 30 minutes administered after secretin


Administration

I.V. infusion: Dilute to 30 mL with 0.9% NaCl

I.V. push: Administer over 30-60 seconds
