Use

Diagnosis of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, chronic pancreatic dysfunction, and some hepatobiliary diseases such as obstructive jaundice resulting from cancer or stones in the biliary tract

Stability

Unstable; should be used immediately after reconstitution, store in freezer (-20°C) or store at 25°C for up to 3 weeks


Mechanism of Action

Hormone normally secreted by duodenal mucosa and upper jejunal mucosa which increases the volume and bicarbonate content of pancreatic juice; stimulates the flow of hepatic bile with a high bicarbonate concentration, stimulates gastrin release in patients with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome


Pharmacodynamics/Kinetics

Inactivated by proteolytic enzymes if administered orally

Peak output of pancreatic secretions: Within 30 minutes

Duration of action: At least 2 hours


Usual Dosage

Potency of secretin is expressed in terms of clinical units (CU). I.V.:

Zollinger-Ellison: 2 CU/kg slow I.V. injection over 1 minute


Administration

Reconstitute with 7.5 mL of normal saline; do not shake; use immediately by direct I.V. injection slowly over 1 minute
