Adverse Reactions

In overdose situation:

Cardiovascular: Hypotension, cardiovascular collapse, tachycardia, atrial and ventricular arrhythmias, edema

Central nervous system: slurred speech, CNS depression, agitation, confusion, seizures, coma

Dermatologic: White, red, or brown skin discoloration

Gastrointestinal: Nausea, vomiting, oral burns GI ulceration, GI bleeding

Genitourinary: Urine discoloration (green)

Hematologic: Hemorrhage

Local: Irritation, burns

Renal: Nephritis

Respiratory: Bronchospasm/wheezing, coughing, dyspnea, pneumonia, pulmonary

When used for spinal neurolysis/motor point blocks: 1% to 10%:

Cardiovascular: Dysrhythmias

Central nervous system: Headache, hyperesthesia, dysesthesia

Gastrointestinal: Bowel incontinence

Genitourinary: Urinary incontinence

Local: Tissue necrosis, pain at injection site

Neuromuscular & skeletal: Motor weakness, nerve damage

Respiratory: Pleural irritation


Stability

Store at <86°F (30°C); protect from humidity


Usual Dosage

Allow to dissolve slowly in mouth; may be repeated every 2 hours as needed

For each neurolysis procedure: 0.5-2 mL (up to 7.5 mL may be needed)

Topical (Baker's P&S): 1% with sodium chloride, liquid paraffin oil and water (120 mL, 240 mL)

Lozenge:

Cepastat®: 1.45% with menthol and eucalyptus oil

Cepastat® Cherry: 0.72% with menthol and eucalyptus oil

Chloraseptic®: 32.5 mg total phenol, sugar, corn syrup

Mouthwash (Chloraseptic®): 1.4% with thymol, sodium borate, menthol, and glycerin (180 mL)

Solution (Liquified Phenol): 88% [880 mg/mL]

Aqueous: 6% [60 mg/mL]
