Use with caution in patients with renal impairment and patients with G-6-PD deficiency


Adverse Reactions

Women should inform their physicians if signs or symptoms of any of the following occur thromboembolic or thrombotic disorders including sudden severe headache or vomiting, disturbance of vision or speech, loss of vision, numbness or weakness in an extremity, sharp or crushing chest pain, calf pain, shortness of breath, severe abdominal pain or mass, mental depression or unusual bleeding


Drug Interactions

Decreased effect: Sutilains decrease activity of nitrofurazone


Stability

Avoid exposure to direct sunlight; excessive heat, strong fluorescent lighting, and alkaline materials


Mechanism of Action

A broad antibacterial spectrum; it acts by inhibiting bacterial enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism; effective against a wide range of gram-negative and gram-positive organisms; bactericidal against most bacteria commonly causing surface infections including Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter cloacae, Clostridium perfringens, Aerobacter aerogenes, and Proteus sp; not particularly active against most Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains and does not inhibit viruses or fungi. Topical preparations of nitrofurazone are readily soluble in blood, pus, and serum and are nonmacerating.


Usual Dosage

Children and Adults: Topical: Apply once daily or every few days to lesion or place on gauze

Patient Information

Follow specific prescriber instructions for application. Protect skin around treated areas with Vaseline® or zinc ointment. Do not apply to skin around eyes. Report signs of sensitization reaction (eg, swelling, redness, itching, burning). Pregnancy/breast-feeding precautions: Inform prescriber if you think you are pregnant. Consult prescriber if breast-feeding.


Nursing Implications

Discoloration does not appreciably affect potency of the drug
