A broad antibacterial spectrum; it acts by inhibiting bacterial enzymes
involved in carbohydrate metabolism; effective against a wide range of
gram-negative and gram-positive organisms; bactericidal against most bacteria
commonly causing surface infections including Staphylococcus aureus,
Streptococcus, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter cloacae,
Clostridium perfringens, Aerobacter aerogenes, and Proteus
sp; not particularly active against most Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains
and does not inhibit viruses or fungi. Topical preparations of nitrofurazone are
readily soluble in blood, pus, and serum and are
nonmacerating. |
