Use

Treatment of blepharitis, conjunctivitis, and keratitis caused by susceptible fungi ( Aspergillus, Candida), Cephalosporium, Curvularia, Fusarium, Penicillium, Microsporum, Epidermophyton, Blastomyces dermatitidis, Coccidioides immitis, Cryptococcus neoformans, Histoplasma capsulatum, Sporothrix schenckii, and Trichomonas vaginalis

Contraindications

Known hypersensitivity to natamycin or any component


Warnings/Precautions

Failure to improve (keratitis) after 7-10 days of administration suggests infection caused by a microorganism not susceptible to natamycin; inadequate as a single agent in fungal endophthalmitis


Adverse Reactions

<1%: Blurred vision, photophobia, eye pain, eye irritation not present before therapy


Drug Interactions

Increased toxicity: Topical corticosteroids (concomitant use contraindicated)


Stability

Store at room temperature (8°C to 24°C/46°F to 75°F); protect from excessive heat and light; do not freeze


Mechanism of Action

Increases cell membrane permeability in susceptible fungi


Pharmacodynamics/Kinetics

Absorption: Ophthalmic: <2% systemically absorbed

Distribution: Adheres to cornea and is retained in the conjunctival fornices


Usual Dosage

Adults: Ophthalmic: Instill 1 drop in conjunctival sac every 1-2 hours, after 3-4 days reduce to one drop 6-8 times/day; usual course of therapy is 2-3 weeks.

Patient Information

For ophthalmic use only. Store at room temperature. Shake before using. Apply prescribed amount as often as directed. Wash hands before using and do not let tip of applicator touch eye or contaminate tip of applicator. Tilt head back and look upward. Gently pull down lower lid and put drop(s) in inner corner of eye. Close eye and roll eyeball in all directions. Do not blink for 1/2 minute. Apply gentle pressure to inner corner of eye for 30 seconds. Wipe away excess from skin around eye. Do not use any other eye preparation for at least 10 minutes. Do not touch tip of applicator to eye or contaminate tip of applicator. Do not share medication with anyone else. May cause sensitivity to bright light (dark glasses may help); temporary stinging or blurred vision may occur. Inform prescriber if you experience eye pain, redness, burning, watering, dryness, double vision, puffiness around eye, vision disturbances, or other adverse eye response; worsening of condition or lack of improvement within 7-10 days. Pregnancy/breast-feeding precautions: Inform prescriber if you are pregnant. Consult prescriber if breast-feeding.
