Adverse Reactions

>10%:

Central nervous system: Dizziness, drowsiness, vertigo, euphoria, clumsiness

Gastrointestinal: Xerostomia

1% to 10%:

Cardiovascular: Orthostatic hypotension

Central nervous system: Ataxia, depression

Ocular: Blurred vision


Drug Interactions

CNS depression is potentiated with ethanol


Mechanism of Action

Nabilone is a synthetic cannabinoid utilized as an antiemetic drug in the control of nausea and vomiting in patients receiving cancer chemotherapy; like delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (the active principal of marijuana), nabilone is a dibenzo(b,d)pyrans


Pharmacodynamics/Kinetics

Absorption: Rapid

Serum half-life: 35 hours


Usual Dosage

Oral:

<18 kg: 0.5 mg twice daily

18-30 kg: 1 mg twice daily

>30 kg: 1 mg 3 times/day

Adults: 1-2 mg twice daily beginning 1-3 hours before chemotherapy is administered and continuing around-the-clock until 1 dose after chemotherapy is completed; maximum daily dose: 6 mg divided in 3 doses


Mental Health: Effects on Mental Status

Dizziness, drowsiness, and euphoria are common; may cause depression; may rarely cause confusion and hallucinations

Concurrent use with psychotropic may produce additive sedation


Dental Health: Local Anesthetic/Vasoconstrictor Precautions
