Pregnancy/Breast-Feeding Implications

Although mumps virus can infect the placenta and fetus, there is not good evidence that it causes congenital malformations


Warnings/Precautions

Pregnancy, immunocompromised persons, history of anaphylactic reaction following egg ingestion or receipt of neomycin


Adverse Reactions

All serious adverse reactions must be reported to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) 1-800-822-7967.

1% to 10%:

Central nervous system: Fever ( less than or equal to 100°F)

Dermatologic: Rash

Endocrine & metabolic: Parotitis

<1%: Convulsions, confusion, severe or continuing headache, fever (>103°F), orchitis in postpubescent and adult males, thrombocytopenic purpura, anaphylactic reactions


Drug Interactions

Whole blood, interferon immune globulin, radiation therapy, and immunosuppressive drugs (eg, corticosteroids) may result in insufficient response to immunization; may temporarily depress tuberculin skin test sensitivity and reduce the seroconversion. DTP, OPV, MMR, Hib, and hepatitis B may be given concurrently; other virus vaccine administration should be separated by greater than or equal to 1 month.


Stability

Refrigerate, protect from light, discard within 8 hours after reconstitution


Mechanism of Action

Promotes active immunity to mumps virus by inducing specific antibodies.


Usual Dosage

Children greater than or equal to 15 months and Adults: 0.5 mL S.C. in outer aspect of the upper arm, no booster


Administration

Reconstitute only with diluent provided; administer only S.C. on outer aspect of upper arm


Test Interactions

Temporary suppression of tuberculosis skin test

Patient Information

Pregnancy should be avoided for 3 months following vaccination; a little swelling of the glands in the cheeks and under the jaw may occur that lasts for a few days; this could happen from 1-2 weeks after getting the mumps vaccine; this happens rarely


Nursing Implications

Federal law requires that the date of administration, the vaccine manufacturer, lot number of vaccine, and the administering person's name, title and address be entered into the patient's permanent medical record
