Use

Mucolytic expectorant in adjunctive treatment of bronchitis, bronchial asthma, pulmonary emphysema, cystic fibrosis, or chronic sinusitis

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to inorganic iodides, iodinated glycerol, or any component; pregnancy, newborns


Warnings/Precautions

Use with caution in patients with thyroid disease or renal impairment


Adverse Reactions

1% to 10%: Gastrointestinal: Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting

<1%: Headache, acne, dermatitis, acute parotitis, thyroid gland enlargement, GI irritation, eyelid edema, pulmonary edema, hypersensitivity


Overdosage/Toxicology

Symptoms include metallic taste, swollen eyelids, sneezing, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea


Drug Interactions

Increased toxicity: Disulfiram, metronidazole, procarbazine, MAO inhibitors, CNS depressants, lithium


Mechanism of Action

Increases respiratory tract secretions by decreasing surface tension and thereby decreases the viscosity of mucus, which aids in removal of the mucus

Absorption: From GI tract

Distribution: Accumulates in the thyroid gland

Elimination: In urine


Usual Dosage

Oral:

Adults: 60 mg 4 times/day
