Use

Produce and maintain analgesia and sedation during diagnostic or surgical procedures (neuroleptanalgesia and neuroleptanesthesia); adjunct to general anesthesia

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to droperidol or fentanyl; patients who have taken MAO inhibitors within 14 days


Adverse Reactions

>10%:

Cardiovascular: Bradycardia, mild to moderate hypotension, tachycardia

Central nervous system: Drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, postoperative drowsiness

Respiratory: Respiratory depression

1% to 10%:

Cardiovascular: Cardiac arrhythmia, orthostatic hypotension, hypertension

Central nervous system: Confusion, CNS depression, extrapyramidal reactions

Gastrointestinal: Biliary spasm

Ocular: Blurred vision

Respiratory: Respiratory depression


Drug Interactions

CNS depressant drugs may cause additive effects; may cause hypertensive crisis if given with MAO inhibitors


Usual Dosage

Children:

Premedication: I.M.: 0.03 mL/kg 30-60 minutes prior to surgery

Adjunct to general anesthesia: I.V.: Total dose: 0.05 mL/kg as slow infusion (1 mL/1-2 minutes) until sleep occurs

Adults:

Premedication: I.M.: 0.5-2 mL 30-60 minutes prior to surgery

Adjunct to general anesthesia: I.V.: 0.09-0.11 mL/kg as slow infusion (1 mL/1-2 minutes) until sleep occurs


Mental Health: Effects on Mental Status

Drowsiness is common; may cause depression or extrapyramidal symptoms; rarely may produce delirium or hallucinations


Mental Health: Effects on Psychiatric Treatment

Contraindicated within 14 days of MAOIs; concurrent use with psychotropics may produce additive sedation

Nursing Implications

An opioid antagonist, resuscitative and intubation equipment, and oxygen should be available

Monitor O2 saturation, blood pressure, vital signs


Dosage Forms

Injection: Droperidol 2.5 mg and fentanyl 50 mcg per mL (2 mL, 5 mL)
