Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to difenoxin, atropine, or any component; severe liver disease; jaundice; dehydrated patient; angle-closure glaucoma; children <2 years of age


Warnings/Precautions

Dosage recommendations should be strictly adhered to. If severe dehydration or electrolyte imbalance is manifested, withhold until appropriate corrective therapy has been initiated. Patients with acute ulcerative colitis should be carefully observed. Use with caution in patients with advanced hepatorenal disease.


Adverse Reactions

1% to 10%:

Gastrointestinal: Nausea, vomiting, xerostomia, epigastric distress


Usual Dosage

Adults: Oral: Initial: 2 tablets, then 1 tablet after each loose stool; 1 tablet every 3-4 hours, up to 8 tablets in a 24-hour period; if no improvement after 48 hours, continued administration is not indicated

May cause drowsiness; confusion

Concurrent use with psychotropic may cause additive sedation or dry mouth

Patient Information

Take as directed; do not exceed recommended dose. If no relief in 48 hours, contact prescriber. Avoid alcohol. Keep out of reach of children; can cause severe and fatal respiratory depression if accidentally ingested. You may experience lightheadedness, depression, dizziness, or weakness; use caution when driving or engaging in tasks that require alertness until response to drug is known. Report acute dizziness, headache, or gastrointestinal symptoms. Pregnancy/breast-feeding precautions: Inform prescriber if you are or intend to be pregnant. Do not breast-feed.


Dosage Forms

Tablet: Difenoxin hydrochloride 1 mg and atropine sulfate 0.025 mg
