Adverse Reactions

Dermatologic: Dermatitis, urticaria

Gastrointestinal: Vomiting, diarrhea, hyperperistalsis

Neuromuscular & skeletal: Paresthesia

Drug Interactions

Increased/prolonged effect of succinylcholine (do not administer within 1 hour)


Mechanism of Action

A pantothenic acid B vitamin analog that is converted to coenzyme A internally; coenzyme A is essential to normal fatty acid synthesis, amino acid synthesis and acetylation of choline in the production of the neurotransmitter, acetylcholine


Pharmacodynamics/Kinetics

Absorption: Well absorbed


Usual Dosage

Children and Adults: Relief of itching and aid in skin healing: Topical: Apply to affected area 1-2 times/day

Adults:

Relief of gas retention: Oral: 2-3 tablets 3 times/day

Prevention of postoperative ileus: I.M.: 250-500 mg stat, repeat in 2 hours, followed by doses every 6 hours until danger passes

Paralyzed ileus: I.M.: 500 mg stat, repeat in 2 hours, followed by doses every 6 hours, if needed

Not for direct I.V. administration; must be diluted
