Use

Ophthalmic: Treatment of superficial ocular infections involving the conjunctiva or cornea due to strains of susceptible microorganisms

Topical: Treatment of superficial infections of the skin due to susceptible organisms, also infection prophylaxis in minor skin abrasions

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to tetracycline or any component; do not use topical formulation in eyes


Warnings/Precautions

Prolonged use may cause superinfection; ophthalmic ointments may retard corneal epithelial healing


Adverse Reactions

1% to 10%: Dermatologic: Faint yellowing of skin

<1%: Edema, reddening of skin, photosensitivity, irritation

Mechanism of Action

Inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding with the 30S and possibly the 50S ribosomal subunit(s) of susceptible bacteria; may also cause alterations in the cytoplasmic membrane; usually bacteriostatic, may be bactericidal


Usual Dosage

Ophthalmic:

Acute infections: Instill 1/2 " (1.25 cm) every 3-4 hours until improvement

Mild to moderate infections: Instill 1/2 " (1.25 cm) 2-3 times/day

Topical: Apply 1-4 times/day, cover with sterile bandage if needed

For ophthalmic use, tilt head back, place medication in conjunctival sac and close eye, apply light finger pressure on lacrimal sac following instillation
