Mechanism of Action

Acts primarily in the small intestine; hydrolyzed to ricinoleic acid which reduces net absorption of fluid and electrolytes and stimulates peristalsis

Onset of action: Oral: 2-6 hours


Usual Dosage

Oral:

Children 2-11 years: 5-15 mL as a single dose

Children greater than or equal to 12 years and Adults: 15-60 mL as a single dose

Emulsified:

36.4%:

Children <2 years: 5-15 mL/dose

Children 2-11 years: 7.5-30 mL/dose

Children greater than or equal to 12 years and Adults: 30-60 mL/dose

60% to 67%:

Children <2 years: 1.25-5 mL

Children 2-12 years: 5-15 mL

Adults: 15-45 mL

95%, mix with 1/2 to 1 full glass liquid:

Children: 5-10 mL

Adults: 15-60 mL


Dietary Considerations

Should be administered on an empty stomach with juice or carbonated beverages
