Use

Treatment of constipation or diarrhea by restoring a more normal moisture level and providing bulk in the patient's intestinal tract; calcium polycarbophil is supplied as the approved substitute whenever a bulk-forming laxative is ordered in a tablet, capsule, wafer, or other oral solid dosage form

Adverse Reactions

1% to 10%: Gastrointestinal: Abdominal fullness


Drug Interactions

Decreased absorption of oral anticoagulants, digoxin, potassium-sparing diuretics, salicylates, tetracycline, and ciprofloxacin


Mechanism of Action

Restoring a more normal moisture level and providing bulk in the patient's intestinal tract


Usual Dosage

Oral:

2-6 years: 500 mg (1 tablet) 1-2 times/day, up to 1.5 g/day

6-12 years: 500 mg (1 tablet) 1-3 times/day, up to 3 g/day

Adults: 1 g 4 times/day, up to 6 g/day


Administration

When using as a laxative, patient should drink with adequate fluids (8 oz of water or other fluids) with each dose

When used as an antacid or for constipation, drink 8 oz of water or other liquid with each dose; diarrhea dose may be repeated every 30 minutes until total dose in achieved


Nursing Implications

Bulk laxatives increase stool frequency; watch for signs of fluid/electrolyte loss, patient should drink adequate fluids (8 oz of water or other fluids) with each dose
