Children <12 years (severe or shock): I.V.: 2.5 mL in 10-50 mL over 15 minutes

Children and Adults: I.M.: 2.5 mL


Patient Information

Serum sickness reaction may occur 5-14 days after receiving antivenin


Nursing Implications

Do not inject into a finger or toe; epinephrine should be available. Desensitization may need to be performed on patients with positive skin test reaction or history of sensitivity to equine serum; 1% of patients with negative skin test may still react when antivenin is administered; skin test should not be done in patients with mild reactions to the spider bite.

Powder for injection: 6000 antivenin units (2.5 mL)
