Mechanism of Action

The mechanism through which benazepril lowers blood pressure is believed to be primarily suppression of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, benazepril has an antihypertensive effect even in patients with low-renin hypertension; amlodipine is a dihydropyridine calcium antagonist that inhibits the transmembrane influx of calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle; amlodipine is a peripheral arterial vasodilator that acts directly on vascular smooth muscle to cause a reduction in peripheral vascular resistance and reduction in blood pressure

Pharmacodynamics/Kinetics

Absorption: Not influenced by the presence of food in the GI tract; food effects on absorption have not been studied

Amlodipine: 64% to 90%

Benazepril: 37%

Time to peak (plasma):

Amlodipine: 6-12 hours

Benazepril: 0.5-2 hours

Usual Dosage

Adults: Oral: 1 capsule daily

Dental Health: Local Anesthetic/Vasoconstrictor Precautions

No information available to require special precautions

Dental Health: Effects on Dental Treatment

Calcium channel blockers (CCBs) cause gingival hyperplasia in approximately 1% of the patients. There have been fewer reports with amlodipine than with other CCBs. The hyperplasia will usually disappear with cessation of drug therapy. Consultation with physician is suggested.
