Applications:

Promote the swift healing of damaged or injured tissues.
Bone and teeth building.
Female disorders.
Bronchitis and irritable cough.
Traditional Uses.
Laxative and soothing.
Anti-inflammatory actions.
Musculoskeletal disorders effects.
Muscle problems.
Anticancer and Antimitotic effect.
Wound healing.
Antigonadotropic activity.
Antifungal activity.

Topical application of comfrey has anti-inflammatory properties, but is recommended only for short-term use and only then if you can be sure the amount of pyrrolizidine alkaloids is less than 100 micrograms per application—something that would be impossible to determine without sophisticated testing equipment, making comfrey an ingredient to avoid. The alkaloid content makes it a potential skin irritant

    Comfrey Phytochemicals and Constituents

Leaf - Mucilage, tannin, allantoin, symphytine, echinidine, Vitamin B12.

Root - Allantoin (0.6-4.7%), about 29% mucilage (polysaccharides of fructose and glucose), phytosterols, triterpenoid (isobauerenol), phenolic compounds (including caffeic, chlorogenic and lithospermic acids), tannin, asparagine, pyrrolizidine alkaloids (including symphytine, cynoglossine, consolidine), inulin, resin, gum, starch.

Constituents of comfrey also include mucilage, steroidal saponins, tannins, pyrrolizidine alkaloids, inulin, vitamin B12 and proteins.

Comfrey Extract treats wounds, sprains, and broken bones. Recent study has pointed to Comfreys many phytochemicals as the primary source for this effect.

It is postulated that allantoin (a protein), mucilage (a gelatinous material), rosmarinic acid (antioxidant), and caffeic acid are among the most important constituents responsible for the advanced anti-inflammatory and tissue regenerating actions of comfrey.

Comfreys protein content has been found to be comparable to that of legumes. Because of this high nutritional content, a number of herbalists use comfrey for targeted oral applications

Oral forms of comfrey are used for antibacterial and expectorant actions. It may also be used to assist in gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, diarrhea, and ulcerative conditions
