The consequences of a pulp exposure, whether from caries, trauma or dental misadventure, can be significant. Whether the tooth is lost and replaced, or root canal therapy and tooth restoration is accomplished, multiple appointments and considerable patient expense are required. Therefore, the preservation of pulpal vitality following pulp exposure is critically important. Calcium hydroxide has been the gold standard for many decades, but has been criticized because of its degradation over time, stimulation of imperfect reparative dentin, and poor mechanical properties. Are other materials, such as glass ionomer, dentin adhesives, or Mineral Trioxide Aggregate MTA), superior alternatives? This presentation will explore the procedures and materials that have been suggested for the management and protection of the exposed vital pulp. Throughout recommendations regarding pulp capping procedures and materials will be based on scientific literature from peer-reviewed dental journals
Learning Objectives:
Learn the impact of pulp exposure on maintaining tooth vitality.
