Allantoin
Allantoin is a chemical compound naturally produced by many organisms, including animals, plants, and bacteria.
It is a frequent ingredient in lotions and skin creams, as well as in oral hygiene products, cosmetics, and other toiletries.
The allantois, from which allantoin gets its name, is an embryonic excretory organ present in most mammals, expect humans and higher apes, in which the compound accumulates.
Animals produce allantois as a byproduct of purine catabolism, in which the waste product uric acid is oxidized and broken down.
It is also present in plants including comfrey, sugar beet, tobacco seed, chamomile, and wheat sprouts.
Herbal extract of comfrey is a popular source of allantoin.
It may also be synthesized from animal urea.
Dermatological properties
Allantoin is a healing, moisturizing, soothing and anti-irritating, keratolytic and non-toxic agent useful in dermatological, cosmetic and veterinary preparation.
Allantoin is a valuable cell-proliferating healing agent which stimulates healthy tissue formation. Allantoin has a pronounced keratolytic and skin softening action, acts as chemical debrider of necrotic and scaling tissue, cleasing up the areas where applied.
Allantoin is effective at quite low concentrations, 0.1% up to 2%.
As natural component, Allantoin was found in fetal Allantoic fluid, in wheat germ, rice polishings, confrey roots, in dog urine and in the urine of pregnant women, in the earth-worm and as organic component of many soils.
Allantoin and derivatives
The amphoteric characteristic of Allantoin permits combination with various chemical substances to form salts and complexes. In combination with various therapeutic substance Allantoin sinergizes their activity reducing at same time their side-effects, sensitizing irritating or toxic properties. The complex and salts thus formed have been shown to possess useful dermatotherapeutic properties.
Use of Allantoin
In treatment of : skin ulcers, wound, scalds, burns and sunburns, carbuncles, acne and skin eruptions, fissures and abrasions, impetigo, eczema, psoriasis.
