Contraindications

Glaucoma; obstructive uropathy (ie, bladder neck obstruction secondary to prostatic hypertrophy); obstructive disorders of GI tract (ie, achalasia, paralytic ileus, pyloroduodenal stenosis); intestinal atony (elderly or debilitated patients); acute hemorrhage with unstable cardiovascular status; ulcerative colitis that is severe or complicated by toxic megacolon; myasthenia gravis


Adverse Reactions

>10%:

Dermatologic: Dry skin

Gastrointestinal: Constipation, xerostomia, dry throat

Respiratory: Dry nose

Miscellaneous: Decreased diaphoresis

1% to 10%: Gastrointestinal: Dysphagia


Drug Interactions

Potassium chloride wax-matrix preparations


Usual Dosage

Adults: Oral: 1-2 tablets 3-4 times/day before meals and 2 tablets at bedtime


Dietary Considerations

Should be administered 30 minutes before meals and at bedtime


Mental Health: Effects on Mental Status

May rarely cause drowsiness, confusion, nervousness, amnesia, or insomnia

Concurrent use with psychotropics may produce additive sedation or dry mouth

Take 30 minutes before meals and at bedtime; maintain good oral hygiene habits, because lack of saliva may increase chance of cavities; observe caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, as drug may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision; notify physician if skin rash, flushing or eye pain occurs; or if difficulty in urinating, constipation, or sensitivity to light becomes severe or persists
